Bring Up Biophilia—What makes us particularly attracted to nature

Léonard Cotte | Unsplash.com

No one can dismiss the amazing feeling we get after spending some time in nature. We instantly feel relaxed and reinvigorated. Some might attribute this effect to time spent far away from work, and even though they could be correct, it is not the whole picture. Biophilia is a relatively new concept that brought the public more awareness to the role nature plays. The term refers to our innate propensity to be in nature or to connect with it. Our love for nature is so strong that the mere presence of reminders can be sufficient to initiate a cascade of positive effects. All the reactions produced can lead to a lightened mood, better cognitive processes, including concentration and focus, and a sudden burst in motivation. Nature’s reminders, also called biophilic elements, can be either alive or inanimate, but living elements can instigate the most impressive outcomes. To embrace the spirit of biophilia, we can begin introducing plants at home or add nature soundtracks as background noise. The possibilities are endless.

Bring Up Artificial Intelligence—What can it do for us, or more precisely what it can’t

Xu Haiwei | Unsplash.com

We keep hearing on the news of the many achievements made by Artificial Intelligence. From winning at Chess to winning at Jeopardy! against its longest streak-winner, AIs seem to truly outdo themselves. However, nobody can agree if those machines truly hold something we can call Artificial Intelligence. They can’t do more than the task they were built for, and they can’t even understand the game. In other words, they seem to greatly lack intelligence. So, should we find another more fitting definition of intelligence, or should we abandon the quest for human-like intelligence altogether? Personally, I consider that each pursuit for anything close to an Ex-Machina to be a most ambitious quest. The human mind and behaviours are really complex, which even raises questions about true AI’s feasibility. But don’t get me wrong, current AIs are very important. They help us achieve better safety measures, automation and greater management.

Bring Up Intelligence—How IQ tests do not measure how smart we really are

Annie Spratt | Unsplash.com

It is so common to compare ourselves with others, and it is even more common to assume that other people are smarter than us. In those cases, we forget to consider that many types of intelligence exist, not only one. However, it is easy to think of ourselves as stupid if we fail our mathematics courses or any courses for that matter. Then, there are those intelligence quotient (IQ) tests that can make us feel even dumber. However, these tests only pretend to be reliable tools to score our overall intelligence. They are all only reliable at determining our likelihood to succeed in an academic setting. Nowadays, another theory suggests that there may be up to ten distinct intelligence, which can only imply that we may all be intelligent but on different levels. Now, the only thing left to do is learning about the diverse types of intelligence and identifying which one fits best with our wits. The only question that remains now is: how intelligent are you, or more importantly what intelligence are you.

Bring Up Tattoo—How it can be possible to mark our skin permanently

Luismi Sánchez | Unsplash.com

Not all appearance alterations are created equal; some may be more short-lived and others more permanent. If you think of tattoos, they mostly belong to the second category. So thinking carefully about certain aspects of the tattoo becomes imperative. Things like the symbolism or the artistry behind your new piece shouldn’t be random. Choosing a good artist who is able to complete your tattoo is something that will prevent you from having future regrets. An expert artist will also be able to guide you regarding your ink placement. Some areas are more sensitive, and some are more susceptible to stretching with age. Thus avoiding those areas for detailed-focused pieces is important. Whether you decide to have a tattoo for cultural, symbolism or aesthetical reasons, you must be satisfied with the final product, as you will be living with it probably for the rest of your life. It is possible to either cover up the tattoo or remove it, but be ready to spend a lot more than the initial tattoo.

Bring Up Grad School—What Is the Reality Behind Higher Education

Chichi Onyekanne | Unsplash.com

For people who want to pursue studies after completing high school, university studies may look very attractive. So, undergraduate studies may lead to graduate studies. However, undergraduate studies are not the same as graduate studies. The latter is not only more complicated, but it is also very different. First of all, contrary to your undergrad, your studies become supervised, and you need to push the boundary of knowledge which can be strenuous. Thus having a supervisor that understands you and can be there to support your work is essential. The wrong supervisor can make your life as a student unbearable, and the inverse can be true of an adequate supervisor. So, we all need to make sure that our supervisors are good listeners, excellent mentors and great motivators. Choosing well can ensure that your next three or four years can be enjoyable and a great learning experience.

Bring Up Cryptography—How to Hide your Messages

Dmitry Ratushny | Unsplash.com

To ensure our privacy, we must be careful about what we share and how we share it. Most often, your personal information, like your passwords, we’ll be hiding from everyone. But that only happens if we transmit the data through a secured channel. Unfortunately, you can be as careful as possible, some people can still find ways to access the information. That’s because secured channels use encryption to conceal your data, and the encryption can be uncovered by people who understand their inner workings, the cryptosystems. All encodings have flaws that can be exploited to find the keys required to unlock all of your data. So imagine someone gaining access to your Facebook or your Instagram. We should all wonder what sensitive information they could get their hands on. Then deleting all data that can threaten your privacy becomes imperative.

Bring Up Fireworks—How Do We Make Colours Explode

Grégoire Bertaud | Unsplash.com

Summer festivals are not only fun for all the foods they’re providing and the activities they’re offering, but also because of their well-anticipated fireworks. Those orchestrated explosions are so grandiose that most can’t help but feel moved by the spectacle. Some may even start wondering what makes those magical displays, and I am for sure one of them. Most of my knowledge about fireworks came from school, where one of my teachers told us about the many components: Oxidizers, fuel, colouring salts and a binding agent. However, what I didn’t know pertained to how they change from one explosion to the next. They can be of different shapes, different colours, and different dimensions. All of which need to be thought through and designed to produce one of the most extraordinary events of the Summer. Whatever the reason fireworks are displayed, we should all grab this opportunity to immerse ourselves in all of their splendour.

Bring up Matching‒How Dating Apps Are disappointing us

Charly Pn | Unsplash.com

It probably wouldn’t be too far-fetched to claim that most people seek, during the course of their lives, a soul mate, or at the very least, a significant other. And in their quest to find the perfect mate, some people opt to satisfy their desires by going after one-night stands. Nowadays, the most popular way to find potential partners is through the use of dating apps, but they come with noteworthy drawbacks. Not everyone on these social platforms may have the same intention; consequently, some may rely on different tactics to ensure their success. If your hope is to mainly attract as many partners as possible, you may be tempted to lie. The constant deception present on dating apps is often the primary source of users’ disappointment. However, if we take a deeper look at the problem, we could also assume that people lie because it is easy and flagrantly non-sanctioned.

Bring Up Working Out—How It Can Benefit Our Entire Body

Jonathan Borba | Unsplash.com

Staying active is hard, and we may very well feel tempted to give it up entirely. However, there are some good reasons why health professionals advocate adopting a more active lifestyle. Beyond the most apparent argument, weight loss, there are other advantages to moving out of your couch and grabbing those neglected sneakers for a walk. These benefits may range anywhere from improved cardiac health to decelerated ageing. However, we all know that establishing a new workout routine can be extremely strenuous and challenging. Hopefully, learning more about its positive effects may help. In case it does not, learning about the potential pitfalls might, without any doubts, do the trick. Being more active doesn’t necessarily mean moving 24/7, but we should always strive to do more than before. Yet, we still need to be aware of our limits and respect them.

Bring Up Perspiration—How I Am Regulating My Temperature

nathan dumlao | unsplash.com

It is no secret that water is a vital component for life on Earth. For instance, us humans need water for more than one physiological process. Water is used by our kidneys to help filter out waste products, by our blood to help transport products to different parts of our body and by our sweat to help our body regulate our internal temperature. Sweat might be regarded as a nuisance, but in the grand scheme of things, it is so beneficial to our health. Sweat or perspiration doesn’t actually smell like anything. What makes for the bad smells are the bacteria that feed off the sweat. Still, we have to remember that without sweat, our body will struggle to keep us from burning up. On hot days, this might be especially deadly considering the increased risk of developing heatstrokes. Without sweat, our internal heat would reach levels that could be lethal. So, instead of curbing off sweat, we might look at options aimed to eliminate bacteria and odours.
