Bring Up Blood—How our oxygen gets carried throughout our body

We could most certainly not live without blood. It is absolutely essential for the survival of our most distant limbs and organs. Even though almost all of our respiration is thanks to our respiratory organs, blood is critical to carry oxygen further. Yet, the blood is not only responsible for some part of respiration, but it is also in charge of transporting many nutrients and immune cells. We, imperatively, need to learn more about the different elements of blood to understand its importance and necessity. Four main elements are particularly important: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. All of these components play a large part in our life. Red blood cells notably carry oxygen, and white blood cells are our primary immune defence against potential chemicals and pathogens. Platelets help the blood coagulate, and plasma is the liquid transporting most nutrients, hormones and cells our body needs.

For people who want to pursue studies after completing high school, university studies may look very attractive. So, undergraduate studies may lead to graduate studies. However, undergraduate studies are not the same as graduate studies. The latter is not only more complicated, but it is also very different. First of all, contrary to your undergrad, your studies become supervised, and you need to push the boundary of knowledge which can be strenuous. Thus having a supervisor that understands you and can be there to support your work is essential. The wrong supervisor can make your life as a student unbearable, and the inverse can be true of an adequate supervisor. So, we all need to make sure that our supervisors are good listeners, excellent mentors and great motivators. Choosing well can ensure that your next three or four years can be enjoyable and a great learning experience.

Staying active is hard, and we may very well feel tempted to give it up entirely. However, there are some good reasons why health professionals advocate adopting a more active lifestyle. Beyond the most apparent argument, weight loss, there are other advantages to moving out of your couch and grabbing those neglected sneakers for a walk. These benefits may range anywhere from improved cardiac health to decelerated ageing. However, we all know that establishing a new workout routine can be extremely strenuous and challenging. Hopefully, learning more about its positive effects may help. In case it does not, learning about the potential pitfalls might, without any doubts, do the trick. Being more active doesn’t necessarily mean moving 24/7, but we should always strive to do more than before. Yet, we still need to be aware of our limits and respect them.

If you’re an adult now, you are lucky enough to have survived the awkward years of teenagehood. These years are filled with changes that are hard to navigate around. From the periods (for girls) and the wet dreams (for boys) to the physical changes, it becomes difficult to find our bearings. It becomes quite easy to feel out of place or even misunderstood. We may even feel like there is no one there to help us. As a girl, speaking about menstruation needed to be whispered as to not be heard. All decisions about our sexual health seemed to be controlled by our parents. Conversely, our parents realized that we were then able to take on more responsibilities which sometimes might have seemed very contradictory. Our puberty is truly a strange moment in our lives when our bodies become partly strangers. We all need time and support to develop and get acquainted once again with ourselves. More than ever, we need to break down any residual taboos regarding puberty and be there for all teens.

Bring Up Perspiration—How I Am Regulating My Temperature

It is no secret that water is a vital component for life on Earth. For instance, us humans need water for more than one physiological process. Water is used by our kidneys to help filter out waste products, by our blood to help transport products to different parts of our body and by our sweat to help our body regulate our internal temperature. Sweat might be regarded as a nuisance, but in the grand scheme of things, it is so beneficial to our health. Sweat or perspiration doesn’t actually smell like anything. What makes for the bad smells are the bacteria that feed off the sweat. Still, we have to remember that without sweat, our body will struggle to keep us from burning up. On hot days, this might be especially deadly considering the increased risk of developing heatstrokes. Without sweat, our internal heat would reach levels that could be lethal. So, instead of curbing off sweat, we might look at options aimed to eliminate bacteria and odours.

Bring Up Water—What is Behind Hydration

Most people don’t drink enough. We don’t drink because water doesn’t taste like much, we don’t drink because we forget, we don’t drink because we overeat. Whatever the reason is, we must change our habits, if only for the wellbeing of our brain cells, our kidney cells and any other living cells in our body. Still, we must introduce water wisely. Bottled water might be convenient, but it can be very detrimental to your health. As a substitute for bottled water, you may consider getting yourself a sturdy and beautiful reusable bottle. That might be especially useful for the next heatwaves to come. If you’re in the sun, drink a lot and drink often to avoid dehydration. But beware that there exist things like overhydration. Our cells definitely don’t like either one. Dehydration may cause some unnecessary stress to them. On the other hand, overhydration may cause the cells, in very extreme cases, to die.

Bring Up Alcohol—What We Can Expect From Drinking

Some people would believe that there is no Summer without alcohol and others would prefer to abstain from consuming it entirely. However, it really doesn’t matter what your relationship is with alcohol. In the end, we all came in contact with alcohol in one form or another. That’s right! I am not talking here about the different kinds of drinking alcohol like wine, beer, liquor, cider, etc. I’m referring to the more general sorts of alcohol we get to encounter during the course of our lives. Of course, we all know our ethanol which is most commonly referred to as drinking alcohol, but there are also methanol and isopropyl alcohol (or rubbing alcohol) – just to name a few. What’s interesting about alcohol -other than its inebriating properties- are its disinfectant and antiseptic properties. So whenever we clean or injure ourselves, we most likely come in contact with these forms of alcohol. But not all alcohol is safe to drink, so please stick with your ethanol of choice.

Bring Up Breathing—How We Get This Precious Oxygen in Our Blood

Fortunately for us, when we stop breathing consciously, our autonomous respiratory system kicks in. This alternative system allows us to entirely refocus our attention on other tasks, which can be truly beneficial. However, when left unchecked for too long, our breathing can change so much that our gas exchange can be impaired. It may be possible that there is no longer enough oxygen entering and enough carbon dioxide leaving our organism. This can cause a series of side effects that could be really detrimental. By refocusing some of our attention on our breathing regularly, we can notice when our breathing gets too shallow or too rapid. Once we notice these changes, we are then able to address them and bring back our breathing to normal. One suggested technique is diaphragmatic breathing which involves breathing deeply. But if this one is not for you, there are always more techniques that you can do.

Bring Up Ageing—What We Can Expect With Growing Older

It’s hard to accept, but every year we are getting older. There seems to be no way around this. Well, that was until very recently. More and more age-related researchers are coming up with new observations suggesting that it could actually be possible. Still, I wouldn’t get too excited as those studies are still in their infancy. Yet, it brings us hope. Until futuristic technologies get developed to revert signs of ageing, we will have to rely on current strategies which aim to slow down the process. If you desire to extend your youth, there are cheap and accessible ways to do it. The principles are quite straightforward, we must remember to take care of our physical health as well as our mental health. From doing more physical activities to learning a new language, we all have the capacity to extend our youth, even if it’s just by a little. I, for one, will attempt these techniques. Who’s with me?
