No one can dismiss the amazing feeling we get after spending some time in nature. We instantly feel relaxed and reinvigorated. Some might attribute this effect to time spent far away from work, and even though they could be correct, it is not the whole picture. Biophilia is a relatively new concept that brought the public more awareness to the role nature plays. The term refers to our innate propensity to be in nature or to connect with it. Our love for nature is so strong that the mere presence of reminders can be sufficient to initiate a cascade of positive effects. All the reactions produced can lead to a lightened mood, better cognitive processes, including concentration and focus, and a sudden burst in motivation. Nature’s reminders, also called biophilic elements, can be either alive or inanimate, but living elements can instigate the most impressive outcomes. To embrace the spirit of biophilia, we can begin introducing plants at home or add nature soundtracks as background noise. The possibilities are endless.Read more

We could most certainly not live without blood. It is absolutely essential for the survival of our most distant limbs and organs. Even though almost all of our respiration is thanks to our respiratory organs, blood is critical to carry oxygen further. Yet, the blood is not only responsible for some part of respiration, but it is also in charge of transporting many nutrients and immune cells. We, imperatively, need to learn more about the different elements of blood to understand its importance and necessity. Four main elements are particularly important: red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, and plasma. All of these components play a large part in our life. Red blood cells notably carry oxygen, and white blood cells are our primary immune defence against potential chemicals and pathogens. Platelets help the blood coagulate, and plasma is the liquid transporting most nutrients, hormones and cells our body needs.

We keep hearing on the news of the many achievements made by Artificial Intelligence. From winning at Chess to winning at Jeopardy! against its longest streak-winner, AIs seem to truly outdo themselves. However, nobody can agree if those machines truly hold something we can call Artificial Intelligence. They can’t do more than the task they were built for, and they can’t even understand the game. In other words, they seem to greatly lack intelligence. So, should we find another more fitting definition of intelligence, or should we abandon the quest for human-like intelligence altogether? Personally, I consider that each pursuit for anything close to an Ex-Machina to be a most ambitious quest. The human mind and behaviours are really complex, which even raises questions about true AI’s feasibility. But don’t get me wrong, current AIs are very important. It is so common to compare ourselves with others, and it is even more common to assume that other people are smarter than us. In those cases, we forget to consider that many types of intelligence exist, not only one. However, it is easy to think of ourselves as stupid if we fail our mathematics courses or any courses for that matter. Then, there are those intelligence quotient (IQ) tests that can make us feel even dumber. However, these tests only pretend to be reliable tools to score our overall intelligence. They are all only reliable at determining our likelihood to succeed in an academic setting. Nowadays, another theory suggests that there may be up to ten distinct intelligence, which can only imply that we may all be intelligent but on different levels. Now, the only thing left to do is learning about the diverse types of intelligence and identifying which one fits best with our wits. Not all appearance alterations are created equal; some may be more short-lived and others more permanent. If you think of tattoos, they mostly belong to the second category. For people who want to pursue studies after completing high school, university studies may look very attractive. So, undergraduate studies may lead to graduate studies. However, undergraduate studies are not the same as graduate studies. The latter is not only more complicated, but it is also very different. First of all, contrary to your undergrad, your studies become supervised, and you need to push the boundary of knowledge which can be strenuous. Thus having a supervisor that understands you and can be there to support your work is essential. The wrong supervisor can make your life as a student unbearable, and the inverse can be true of an adequate supervisor. So, we all need to make sure that our supervisors are good listeners, excellent mentors and great motivators. That’s because secured channels use encryption to conceal your data, and the encryption can be uncovered by people who understand their inner workings, the cryptosystems. All encodings have flaws that can be exploited to find the keys required to unlock all of your data. So imagine someone gaining access to your Facebook or your Instagram. Summer festivals are not only fun for all the foods they’re providing and the activities they’re offering, but also because of their well-anticipated fireworks. Those orchestrated explosions are so grandiose that most can’t help but feel moved by the spectacle. Some may even start wondering what makes those magical displays, and I am for sure one of them. Most of my knowledge about fireworks came from school, where one of my teachers told us about the many components: Oxidizers, fuel, colouring salts and a binding agent. However, what I didn’t know pertained to how they change from one explosion to the next. They can be of different shapes, different colours, and different dimensions. All of which need to be thought through and designed to produce one of the most extraordinary events of the Summer. These benefits may range anywhere from improved cardiac health to decelerated ageing. However, we all know that establishing a new workout routine can be extremely strenuous and challenging. Hopefully, learning more about its positive effects may help. In case it does not, learning about the potential pitfalls might, without any doubts, do the trick. The most enduring morning staple is probably coffee. Most people may even swear that their ritual cup of coffee is the only thing that keeps them going. Without coffee, some people might feel lost or incomplete. And even though we can all agree that heaps of people drink coffee, they do not all drink it the same way. Some may prefer filtered coffee, and others instant coffee. Yet, the differences are not so disparate. In a sense, instant coffee begins as a brewed cup of coffee. Only its transformation doesn’t stop there. To make instant coffee, we need to extract all water molecules from the brewed mixture. And if you don’t mind the slight change in flavour palette, switching to instant coffee might be an incredible eco-friendly move.
